August has been a full month in the Bright Star auction market. While some equipment categories have softened slightly, there’s still strong buyer interest for the right machines, and overall results continue to be steady. Lumber auctions are proving to be reliable indicators of market strength heading into fall, and the consistency across multiple consignors shows that buyers are still willing to step up when quality is offered.
The August 12 IronRing - while the log skidders seemed to be a tough spot of the day, the market overall held steady. Overall, results were a bit softer than the last few IronRing auctions. Even so, several key machines brought strong bidding. A 2017 John Deere 550K Dozer sold for $97,500, the 2020 Tigercat cable skidder brought $82,500, the 2007 Kenworth log truck went for $43,000, and the 2022 Echo band mill reached $75,000. These highlights show that while some categories are easing, solid demand remains for well-kept, desirable machines.
The August 15 Factory Direct auction carried on the steady trend we’ve come to expect from this kind of equipment and auction format. Factory direct equipment continues to draw consistent attention, which is a good sign as we look toward the upcoming fall Factory Direct auctions. Containers stayed in line with expectations, with the 40' units in the $6,000–$7,000 range.
The August 19 Lumber auction was our strongest one to date. There were several new buyers as well as repeat participants, and the seller was very pleased with the results. This auction also marked the first time we included pallets. While pallet pricing was a bit tough, we’re encouraged by the start of this new venture and hope to continue to grow this segment of the lumber auction. Another pallet consignor is already lined up for the next lumber auction. We continue to invite consignments of precuts, cants, pallets, crane mats, and other lumber, and we’re excited about the long-term outlook for this format, Lord willing. On the fence about selling lumber? Let’s talk!
That same day, the Jericho Wood auction turned in steady results from start to finish. Nothing was over the top, but the market held firm throughout, leaving the seller satisfied. Highlights included the Morbark debarker entirety at $25,000, the Cleereman mill entirety at $16,000, and a 1997 Cat skidder at $19,000.
Rounding out this issue’s report, the August 22 Beaver Run auction delivered a strong close. A 2005 Wood-Mizer LT70 sold for $16,000, while a Yates American moulder entirety did very well at $28,000. The 2016 Manitou telehandler also exceeded expectations at $35,000. With a solid onsite crowd and an engaged bidder base, this auction provided an excellent finish for our happy seller, well above goal.
Looking Ahead
As summer winds down, the market continues to show signs of balance. There’s consistent strength in sawmill, factory direct, quality rolling stock, and lumber consignments. Buyers remain active, most sellers are meeting reserve expectations, and we anticipate a busy fall season. With several major auctions already scheduled, September promises to keep both buyers and consignors engaged in what continues to be a steady, healthy equipment market.
